Mum loves to get out and go for a drive, well……., I do the driving!
Getting Mum in and out of vehicles is becoming more of a challenge, not to mention her vision impairment.
I looked at all sorts of aids and devices to help me get her in and out of the car, a Honda CRV (affectionately known as ‘Critter’).
What didn’t work
An Aerobic step – this is a great idea if the vehicle height is a problem. They’re lightweight, stable, sturdy, height adjustable and an ideal length and width.
A Seat Turntable – I sourced this item from an Auto Shop. It sounded like the solution, however, the ‘dip’ in the seat of my car, rendered this practically useless. Thankfully the Auto Shop gave me a refund.
A Slide Sheet – Well, what a performance, more hassle than it’s worth navigating the centre console and the confined manoeuvring space.
Turny Evo – a seat lift fitted to your vehicle. A dream I aspire to today, but outside my budget!
The solution
The Handy Hand-L – Wouldn’t be without it!
It’s the grip Mum needs, in the place that she needs it to give her the confidence, independence and dignity to transfer herself in and out of the vehicle.
I guide Mum & her wheelie walker, to the open car door. Mum grabs the armrest on the door with her left hand, and I remove the walker and guide her right hand to the Handy Hand-L. At this point, Mum is independent again and is able to seat and position herself comfortably. And getting out is a breeze!

P.S. – You don’t have to be an Elder-Venturer to benefit from a Handy Hand-L
